An etching tied to the Gettysburg Address, the speech Abraham Lincoln delivered on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The ceremony honored Union soldiers who died in the battle there four months earlier, and the address ran only a few minutes, far shorter than the main oration that day by Edward Everett. Printmakers and illustrators of the period and later often returned to the scene and the speech, so artworks like this one show how the event was remembered and retold.
