A sleigh and a sled appear alongside Santa Claus in this color engraving, which sets it apart from other Christmas pictures of the period. Printed around 1868 for the U.S. Confection Co. of New York, the label promoted sugar plums, a treat made familiar to American children by Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." By the late 1860s, Thomas Nast's cartoons in *Harper's Weekly* were also shaping how Americans pictured Santa, and confectioners borrowed that festive image to sell sweets during the holidays.
