The phrase "Top o' the mornin'" gives this card its character, a stock greeting in mock-Irish speech that stood in for the holiday itself. Saint Patrick's Day cards like this one were a common part of American holiday mail from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth, when Irish communities in many cities were building parades, societies, and public celebrations. Filed among patriotic images, the card reflects how the day blended pride in Irish heritage with a claim to American belonging. Its dialect and shamrock imagery turned ethnic identity into something a whole household could share.
