This glass negative is catalogued under the name of Thomas W. Lamont, the banker and partner at J.P. Morgan & Co. who became one of the most visible American financiers of the 1920s. The record does not give a date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its card, which has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency active from about 1901 to 1932, supplied newspapers with news photographs of public figures, so the portrait likely served a press purpose. Its glass plate format is typical of that era's working news photography.
