Vergennes, Vermont, in 1890 was a small city on Otter Creek, a few miles above the creek's mouth at Lake Champlain. The falls there had powered mills for generations, and manufacturing and river and lake trade anchored its economy, while the surrounding valley remained largely farmland, with dairying a major source of income. Vergennes liked to point out that it held one of the earliest municipal charters in the country, and that claim shaped local pride and civic life. The town's streets, churches, and mill yards on this map show a community that had been settled for more than a century and was still defined by its waterpower and its place on the lake.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Vergennes, Vermont, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
