St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in 1884 was a manufacturing town built around the Fairbanks scale works, whose platform scales were sold across the country and gave the town its national reputation. The Passumpsic River ran through the village, and rail lines brought in workers, raw materials, and shipments that kept the mills busy. The town's civic life centered on the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, a library and art gallery founded by the Fairbanks family, which housed a large Albert Bierstadt landscape that visitors came to see. Residents in 1884 would have known St. Johnsbury first as a company town with a strong sense of civic pride and philanthropy.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
