Harris & Ewing was a Washington, D.C., studio photography firm that operated from the 1900s into the 1940s, and this picture is one of its working-day portraits, taken on a January day in the late 1930s. The studio photographed a steady stream of government officials, diplomats, and ordinary residents who came to the capital, and its negatives built a large visual record of the city in those decades. The image's title suggests a sitter caught mid-assignment rather than posed in a formal studio setting, which makes it a useful glimpse of how the firm worked. Because the exact date is uncertain, it is best read as a circa 1938 or 1939 record of Washington life.
