This glass negative is titled "Mitchel funeral," and the title, taken from Bain News Service caption data, is unverified. If it refers to John Purroy Mitchel, the former New York City mayor who died in a military training flight accident in July 1918, the image would record a public mourning for a politician whose death shocked the city. The Bain News Service, run by photographer George Grantham Bain, sent photographers to cover news events in New York and Washington in the 1910s and 1920s, and its glass negatives capture many such ceremonies. Because the record gives no date or photographer, the exact event and the people shown remain uncertain.
