A cigar box label is an unusual vehicle for a horse picture, and this one stands out for its bold red-coated rider clearing a fence in mid-jump. Labels like this were printed in large runs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when lithographers produced colorful paper designs to be pasted onto wooden cigar boxes and make a brand memorable at the shop counter. Sporting scenes such as fox hunting and steeplechasing were popular choices because they suggested energy, prestige and an outdoor, gentlemanly life. Look closely at the layered colors and the dynamic angle of the horse, which show how much craft went into a piece of packaging meant to be seen only briefly.
