Thomas Nast's wood engraving of Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving dinner appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on November 20, 1869, placing the nation's familiar personification at a holiday table. Thanksgiving had become a fixed national observance only in recent years, after Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and Nast used the occasion as a setting for political commentary. The caption tracings list subjects including foreign relations and public affairs, which suggests the scene speaks to the state of the country as much as to the holiday. Nast was the magazine's leading cartoonist and later became known for his attacks on the Tammany Hall politician William Marcy "Boss" Tweed.
