Collier's, the weekly magazine, made its Thanksgiving issue a seasonal event, and this cover shows a family gathered around a dinner table. Holiday covers like this one were a staple of American illustrated magazines in the early twentieth century, when artists were asked to capture domestic scenes that readers would recognize as their own. Look closely at the faces and gestures, which were meant to suggest warmth and togetherness at a time when many families were moving between farms, towns and cities. Covers such as this one helped define how Thanksgiving was pictured in print for generations.
