A peacock stands on the hood of a red tractor, the bird's fanned tail and the machine's bold color making an odd pairing that could only come from a farm yard. Tractors were a common subject in twentieth-century rural photography, when mechanization was rapidly replacing horses and mules across American fields. Photographs like this one often show the personal side of farm life, where working machines shared space with the animals, pets and ornamental birds kept around the homestead. Peacocks were popular on country properties for their looks, so the scene reads as both a record of equipment and a glimpse of everyday rural character.
