The emblem in this picture is the red hood badge of a Farmall tractor, the line of general-purpose tractors International Harvester introduced in 1924. The close crop puts the metal lettering and its raised edges front and center, showing how the maker branded its machines right where the eye lands on the engine cover. Farmall tractors helped change American farming by letting one machine handle row cultivation as well as plowing, and the red paint became a familiar sight across Midwestern fields. Look closely at the surface wear and the shine on the emblem for a sense of how these machines were used and kept over the decades.
