Few pictures from the war years put a newspaper's own voice at the center of the frame, and this one does so by naming the New York Herald and its New Year's address for 1864. The Herald, founded by James Gordon Bennett Sr., was one of the largest and most widely read dailies in the country, and it often took sharp positions on Abraham Lincoln and the conduct of the war. A printed address of this kind would have been read as a statement of editorial opinion as much as a holiday greeting, which makes it useful for seeing how the press framed the fourth year of the conflict.
