A flower-petal hat sets this chromolithograph apart from the angel and fairy pictures around it: the young girl wears a crown of layered petals, and the bright, stacked colors of the chromolithographic process give the whole sheet a soft, jewel-like glow. Chromolithographs were printed from a separate stone for each color, so a single image could require many passes through the press. Popular in the late nineteenth century, they were affordable enough to hang in ordinary parlors and were often sold as decorative keepsakes. Their sentimental, idealized children, angels and flowers reflect the taste of that era, when such pictures blurred the line between religious devotion and domestic charm.
