Lincoln's visit to the Antietam battlefield in early October 1862, a few weeks after the September 17 battle, is the moment this picture records, with the president standing among officers outside a tent. Alexander Gardner made the exposure, and the record names Gen. George B. McClellan, Dr. Jonathan Letterman, the army's medical director, and Gen. Henry J. Hunt among those present. The print was issued later, around 1866, as plate 23 in the first volume of Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*, which brought battlefield views to a wider public.
