Bells, forget-me-nots, and a brood of chicks make this one a classic of the early twentieth-century holiday postcard, a form that was enormously popular in the decades before the First World War. Easter cards of this period typically pair spring flowers with symbols of renewal, and the bell here points to the church bells that were said to fly to Rome and return with eggs on Holy Saturday. Cards like this were sent to wish friends and relatives well at the holiday, often with a short handwritten message on the back. Their bright color printing and sentimental imagery reflect how mass-produced postcards became a common way for ordinary people to keep in touch.
