Princess Ena of Battenberg, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria who was born at Balmoral, became Queen of Spain when she married King Alfonso XIII in Madrid in May 1906. The wedding procession was attacked when an anarchist threw a bomb at the royal carriage, and the day ended in bloodshed among the crowd and the horses. Picture postcards of the young royal couple like this one circulated widely in the years that followed, giving the public a keepsake of a new queen and a royal marriage. Its place under Valentine's Day reflects the romantic appeal of the match rather than any direct link to the holiday.
