Riders on penny-farthing bicycles, with their oversized front wheels and tiny rear ones, stand out in this scene of a dirt road seen only as dark outlines against the light. The penny-farthing, also called the high-wheeler, was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, before the safety bicycle with two wheels of equal size took over. Its great height made it fast but hard to mount and dangerous to fall from, which is part of why the design faded. Pictures like this one show how a machine that looked odd even then became a symbol of the Victorian craze for cycling.
