The ship in this picture is the *La Lorraine*, a French liner of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, which carried passengers between France and New York. The photograph is dated August 5, 1914, only days after Germany declared war on France and Britain entered the conflict, a period when transatlantic crossings were disrupted and ships were often photographed amid uncertainty at the dock. The title comes from notes made by the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, and those notes are unverified, so the exact scene and vantage point are open to question. The collection's wide range of New York waterfront and news subjects makes it a useful record of that moment.
