The record gives only two names, Straus and Bonheur, with the initials L.L. and O. Straus, and notes that they come from unverified caption cards, so the sitters' identities remain uncertain. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sold news and portrait photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its captions were often written quickly from names passed along with each assignment. The small glass negatives, five by seven inches or smaller, are now a major resource for researchers of that period.
