Madison Square, the park and intersection at Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue in Manhattan, is the subject here, and the Bain News Service's own caption is the only source for the title, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of roughly 40,000 glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, streets and public places in New York from about 1900 to 1920. Glass negatives like this one were the standard medium of that era, and their sharp detail makes them valuable to historians of the city's streetscape.
