Thomas Jefferson's Rotunda at the University of Virginia anchors the academical village he laid out in Charlottesville, and these plan and elevation drawings show how the building was meant to look before it rose. Jefferson modeled its domed form on the Pantheon in Rome, reducing the proportions to suit a campus building. Construction ran through the 1820s, and the university opened in 1825. A fire in 1895 gutted the interior, and it was rebuilt, so the drawings record the original design more reliably than the building's later interiors do.
