This watercolor shows a tournament at the Chevy Chase Club in Maryland, a private club just outside Washington, D.C., and it appeared in Harper's magazine in 1902. Its setting ties it to the early years of American golf, when the game was taken up by affluent city families and the country club was becoming a center of social life. Golf was still new enough then that scenes of competition on a manicured course carried a sense of fashion and novelty. Look at the clothing and the gathered spectators for a sense of who was expected to watch and play.
