Man and woman in early sporting attire, woman holding a golf club

Share

A man and a woman pose in early sporting clothes, and the woman holds a golf club, a detail that marks this as one of the earlier glimpses of women taking up the game as players rather than spectators. Golf in this period was largely a pastime of the leisured classes, and clubs of the era were slow to admit women, often restricting them to set hours or separate courses. Portraits like this one, with its stiff posing and carefully arranged costume, show how the sport was being presented to the public and how it was slowly becoming a place where women could be seen with equipment in hand.
