Few sitters from the 1840s left a record as direct as this unnamed man, whose white hair and wire-rimmed spectacles stand out in a silvered plate barely larger than a playing card. Daguerreotypes like this one were made by exposing a polished sheet of silver-plated copper to light, producing a single, mirror-like image that could not be duplicated. Portraits of older sitters were especially prized in 1844, since the long exposure times of the period demanded stillness and the process rewarded the deep lines and textures of age. Because the record gives no name, the picture is best read as a window onto everyday photographic portraiture of its time.
