The only identifying detail in this record is the title "Strunk," a surname that the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that it has not been verified. The picture survives as a single glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, and it has no date, so its subject has to be understood through the company's paperwork rather than a firm dated record. George Grantham Bain started his news photography service in New York around 1899, supplying newspapers with pictures of people, events, and city life that they needed quickly. The glass plates he produced, later held by the Library of Congress, are a major visual record of American life in the early twentieth century.
