Few airships of their day carried a name as pointed as Domitor, Latin for "tamer," and this lithograph, signed by H. Francois, shows the craft as a showpiece of French engineering at a time when steerable balloons drew crowds in Paris and beyond. Lithography was the popular print medium of the period, reaching readers through newspapers, almanacs and illustrated journals, so an image like this would have circulated widely. Worth noticing is how the artist sets the long, rigid hull against open sky, a visual shorthand for the hope that human flight could be steered rather than simply carried by the wind.
