This picture is filed under the Gettysburg Address, the brief speech Abraham Lincoln gave on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battlefield was still fresh from the fighting of early July, and the cemetery was being laid out for the Union dead. Lincoln spoke for only a few minutes, well after Edward Everett's two-hour oration, yet his remarks became among the most quoted in American history. Images tied to the address often draw viewers because the place and the occasion are so closely linked in the public memory.
