A sweet-faced girl holding a sprig of clover is the detail that makes this postcard stand out from the other Cupid cards on the board. Clover was a common motif in greeting cards of the late 1800s and early 1900s, often read as a sign of luck or of a promise to come, and it sits here beside the more familiar Cupid imagery of arrows and hearts. Valentine postcards of this era were mass-produced by printers in the United States and Europe and sent cheaply through the mail, so they reveal a great deal about sentimental taste and courtship customs of the time. Notice how the title, "Love's Greeting," is set into the design itself, a typical feature of cards from the period.
