This gelatin silver print shows the Republican baseball team of the House of Representatives, lawmakers who took the field in Washington, D.C., in the 1920s. Congressional teams often played friendly games against one another, and such contests drew press interest because they let officials appear in uniform rather than in committee rooms. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of news photographs made in the capital, and its April 1927 date is a best guess. Notice how the players arrange themselves for the camera, a formal habit of the period.
