Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1862 was a river town of a few thousand people on the Rappahannock, with its wharves, flour and grain mills, and warehouses serving the farms of the surrounding Piedmont edge. The Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad linked it to Richmond and Washington, which made the town a commercial stop on a corridor that was becoming a military one. Slavery was central to its economy and social order, and the town's residents lived with the knowledge that the surrounding countryside depended on enslaved labor. The war arrived in earnest in 1862, and within a year the place would be fought over and largely damaged in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, so this view shows the town as it stood just before that rupture.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Fredericksburg, Virginia, drawn in 1862. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
