Red Jacket, Michigan, in 1881 was a mining town on the Keweenaw Peninsula, where the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company dominated the local economy. The village had been renamed Calumet in 1879, though many residents still used the older name, and the company's shafts, stamp mills, and rail lines shaped its streets and hillside neighborhoods. Copper drew workers from Cornwall, Ireland, Germany, Finland, and Italy, so the town's churches, halls, and boarding houses served a crowded mix of languages and customs. Calumet and Hecla was then among the largest copper producers in the Lake Superior district, and its fortunes set the pace for the whole peninsula.
