In 1880 San Diego was a town of about 2,600 people, most of them packed into the grid of streets Alonzo Horton had laid out near the bay, which had by then overtaken the old Spanish plaza as the center of business. The Santa Fe line that would finally bring a railroad to the city was still years away, so freight and passengers came by sea and by wagon road, and the harbor was the town's main link to the outside world. Lumber, supplies, and goods arrived by ship, while the surrounding valleys shipped grain and livestock out through the port. Residents knew the place as a small, fast-growing city of wooden storefronts and churches, where a new courthouse and schools gave civic life a visible shape and a growing Chinese community worked in laundries, shops, and labor along the waterfront.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of SanDiego, California, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
