The "Strong" Government cartoon from *Puck* casts Ulysses S. Grant's two terms, 1869 to 1877, as a feat of strength, with the administration's scandals drawn as heavy weights the president is trying to hold up. Published in the illustrated satirical weekly that gave the era many of its most memorable images, it condenses a period marked by revelations of graft, including the Whiskey Ring and the Credit Mobilier affair, into a single visual joke. Grant's reputation as a Civil War hero made him a popular figure, so cartoonists who turned against his administration often used his military bearing against him. Read today, the drawing shows how political satire in the 1870s relied on familiar scenes and labels that readers recognized at once.
