Chicago in 1868 was a rail and grain city, and its population was approaching 300,000. Its stockyards, grain elevators, and lumber yards along the Chicago River made it the central market for midwestern livestock, wheat, and timber, and the Board of Trade on LaSalle Street was among the country's leading commodity exchanges. That spring the Republican National Convention met in Chicago and nominated Ulysses S. Grant for president, a sign of the city's growing political weight. Residents were rebuilding and expanding quickly, raising street grades and extending the water and sewer systems, though few of them could have imagined that the wooden districts they were building would burn within three years.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Chicago, Illinois, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
