Chicago in 1890 had passed one million residents, and the 1889 annexation of suburbs such as Hyde Park and Lake View pushed its limits far south and north along the lakeshore. The Auditorium Building, opened downtown in late 1889 with a theater and hotel under one roof, stood as a symbol of the city's ambitions. That year Congress chose Chicago to host the World's Columbian Exposition, the fair marking four centuries since Columbus reached the Americas, and planners turned their attention to the marshy lakefront in Jackson Park. Meanwhile, factories, packinghouses, and rail yards still drove the economy, and the crowded neighborhoods on the north, west, and south sides were home to large German, Irish, Polish, and Swedish communities.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Chicago, Illinois, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
