Buena Vista, Colorado, in 1882 was a young railroad and mining town in the Arkansas River valley of Chaffee County, not yet a decade old. Its growth followed the silver boom at Leadville to the north, and the town served as a supply and shipping point for the mining camps and ranches of the upper Arkansas valley. The arrival of the Denver, South Park and Pacific narrow-gauge line made hauling ore, timber and freight far easier than the old wagon roads. Residents also knew the town for the nearby hot springs at Mount Princeton, which drew visitors seeking health cures and a summer escape from the heat of the plains.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Buena Vista, Colorado, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
