Canon City, the seat of Fremont County in south-central Colorado, stood in 1882 as a small river town where the Arkansas River leaves the mountains onto the plains. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad had reached it in 1872, and that line carried ore, lumber, and farm goods out while bringing supplies in during the silver boom of the late 1870s. The Colorado Territorial Penitentiary, opened there in 1871, was one of the town's largest employers and a source of local pride and worry alike. Residents of the day knew the place as the gateway to the Royal Gorge, where the railroad fight of 1878 had drawn national attention to the valley.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Canon City, Colorado, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
