Few pictures in the George Grantham Bain Collection carry as much weight as those showing displaced people from the Armenian lands of the late Ottoman Empire. This glass negative, made by the Bain News Service, is titled "Armenian refugees," though the record gives no date and notes that the title comes from unverified caption information. Armenian refugees were a major humanitarian concern in the years around World War I, when deportations and massacres drove large numbers of people from their homes in Anatolia and surrounding regions. Bain's studio was a commercial news photo service, so pictures like this one were made to be sold to newspapers reporting on those crises.
