Snow lies on the wharves and rigging in this winter view of the East River, where horse-drawn carts make their way along the waterfront. Rudolph Ruzicka, a Bohemian-born American engraver, made the print in 1910 using chiaroscuro, a wood engraving method that builds light and shadow from several blocks inked in different tones. Signed in pencil and numbered 36 of 38, it comes from a small edition. The scene of sailing ships and horse-drawn wagons shows a city waterfront that still ran largely on sail and animal power.
