Lunch counter life at the Pike Place Public Market gets a close look in this scene of the cafeteria serving the Mannings' Coffee Department. Pike Place opened in Seattle in 1907 as a farmers' market where growers sold directly to city shoppers, and by the time this room was in use, the market had grown into a busy mix of produce stalls, fish sellers, and small food businesses. Coffee roasters and cafes were a natural fit there, since shoppers wanted a bite and a cup while they moved between stands. Noticing the crowded tables and the everyday dining setting gives a sense of how the Market doubled as a neighborhood gathering place.
