The caption attached to this glass negative names Marcia Van Dresser, but the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data written by the Bain News Service, so the identification and date remain uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds news pictures made by a New York photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early 20th century. Bain's negatives were usually made quickly for daily press use, so their captions and dates are often the best clues to who or what appears in them. Looking at the image itself alongside the surviving records is the most reliable way to read this plate.
