Royal S. Copeland is the subject of this glass negative, a homeopathic physician who served as New York City's health commissioner before winning a seat in the U.S. Senate from New York in 1922. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan wire-photo agency, produced thousands of such portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century, and its negatives document many public figures of the period. The record gives no date, and the name comes from the agency's own caption cards, so it is worth treating the identification as provisional. Copeland's career in public health and his later Senate work make his portrait a useful record of the period's political life.
