St. Louis hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, a world's fair marking the centennial of the 1803 land deal that doubled the nation's size. The fair spread across roughly 1,200 acres of Forest Park on the city's west side and ran from April into December, drawing visitors from across the country and abroad. The city then had about 575,000 residents and ranked among the largest in the nation, with shoe factories, breweries, and rail lines that made it a major commercial center. Fairgoers rode a giant Ferris wheel and walked past exhibit palaces full of machinery, electrical displays, and goods from the Philippines and other newly acquired lands, a mix of industrial pride and imperial display. The fair also hosted the third modern Olympic Games, held alongside the exhibition.
