St. Louis in 1904 was a major river and railroad city whose shoe factories, meatpacking houses, and breweries had made it one of the largest urban centers in the country. That spring the Louisiana Purchase Exposition opened in Forest Park on the city's western edge, marking the centennial of the 1803 transfer of the vast Louisiana Territory to the United States. The fairgrounds were laid out with exhibition palaces, gardens, and an amusement section, and they drew millions of visitors over the months the fair ran. The fair also hosted the Olympic Games that summer, the first held in the United States. Residents remembered 1904 as the moment their city stood before the nation, and its civic ambitions for the following decades were shaped by that memory.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of St. Louis Worlds Fair, Missouri, drawn in 1904. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
