Steel being forged into plowshares at the Parlin & Orndorf Co. works in Canton, Illinois, is the subject of this stereograph. Canton was a manufacturing town for farm implements, and the plow was among the most basic tools on the American farm. The card dates to about 1917, when wartime demand for food put heavy pressure on implement makers to keep up. Keystone View Co. of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued it as one of its paired views, meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth across the shop floor.
