Here the satirical magazine *Punch* is personified as a recruiting sergeant, who calls out, "Now my lads, your country wants you. Who's for the front?" The poster was drawn for the September 2, 1914, issue, only weeks after Britain entered the First World War in early August. In those first months Britain depended entirely on volunteers, and images like this one urged men to enlist before conscription was introduced in 1916. Its blend of humor and direct appeal is typical of the recruiting art of the period.
