The title, "Mob in Champagne district," points to a crowd in a place called Champagne, but the Bain News Service's titles were unverified, so the exact location and occasion remain uncertain. The plate comes from George Grantham Bain's collection of news photographs, which his agency sold to newspapers and magazines, mostly in the early decades of the twentieth century. Glass negatives of this kind recorded crowds and street scenes in fine detail, and with no date on record, the photographic style and the agency's period are the best clues for placing it in time.
