Its title names only a German Kaiser reviewing soldiers, and the record does not say which ruler or where the review took place. The subject is probably Wilhelm II, who reigned as German emperor from 1888 to 1918 and often inspected his troops in person, so such scenes were common in the illustrated press of the period. The picture survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news service supplied photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Because the title comes from unverified caption data, the identification should be treated as provisional.
